Turning problems into opportunities
WHAT IS THE KANYIKE PROJECT? The Kanyike Project is an on-going initiative to help with self-sustainable community development in Uganda. It was founded in 1986 in an area devastated by many years of war by Fr. Kakuba Kapia who was the driving force behind its vision of empowering members of the local community to support themselves. Any work undertaken in the Project is suggested and implemented by the people in the villages, ensuring they have a sense of ownership of and pride in anything that takes place; nothing is imposed by anyone outside.
WHERE IS IT? Uganda is located between The Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda. The Kanyike Project itself is located in Mpigi district 48km from Kampala and 5km from the main Kampala-Masaka Road. Until recently it was working in the villages of Magejjo, Mwereke, Naluwembe and Butenga (of which the total population is around 3500) but local need has lead to expansion and the Kanyike Project now helps people in 8 villages comprising 5595 people.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE MONEY WE RAISE? All of the money we raise goes directly to the Project and NONE is lost to administration. Every penny received goes directly to the people who need it most.
More information on specific initiatives within the Project can be found in the 'Our Work' section.
