Discover how the project is working to combat HIV/AIDS
In 2007 it was noticed within the Kanyike Project that the number of families affected by HIV/AIDS was increasing, so a three year programme was drawn up to challenge this, of which the objectives are:
- to promote behaviour change
- HIV/AIDS care and social support for protection for people and their families
- to reduce its spread through education and awareness
- to build and strengthen communities in their ability to respond to the situation.
HIV/AIDS continues to be an issue, and is in actual fact increasing due to an influx of people from outside of the area. A trained counsellor lives in the village, and provides not only an individual counselling service, but heads a group for women who have tested HIV positive. These women meet once a week, creating traditional handicrafts such as baskets which can be sold at market. This coming together provides the women with support, as well as discussing issues related to their illness as a group.

Dan, the HIV/AIDS counsellor, is only able to be present in the village due to fundraising initiatives held in the UK. Dan not only works with all sufferers and provides them with nutritional advice and coping mechanisms - he also runs seminars for the local community and children at Magejjo Primary school.

The initiative has been so successful in achieving its objectives that it has been agreed that funding needs to continue beyond the initial three years. We can only do this with your help!
